KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A late penalty kept 18th-ranked SIUE men’s soccer unbeaten through the first four games of the season as the Cougars earned a 1-1 draw Friday on the road at Kansas City.

“Kansas City is a tough team,” SIUE Head Coach Cale Wassermann said. “The fight was there from our guys. They gave everything they had.”

With the Cougars trailing 1-0 in the 86th minute, Mitchell Murphy made a charge into the Roos’ box and worked around Kansas City goalkeeper Stefano Camerlengo, who slid out taking Murphy’s legs out, earning the Cougars’ the penalty.

Pavel Dashin buried the kick for his first goal as a Cougar to knot the score.

“He stepped up in a huge moment,” Wasserman said of Dashin. “Late in the game down one-nil, and he gets his first career goal.”

Dashin’s goal answered Kansas City’s second-half goal from Luke Hoelting. Hoelting scored at the back post after a counterattack by the Roos.

“We gave up a goal we would like to have back,” Wassermann added.

Kansas City outshot SIUE 15-7. Both sides had four shots on goal. Sam Gomez made three saves in goal for SIUE. Camerlengo made three saves for the Roos.

SIUE returns home for a Tuesday matchup with Western Illinois.

“It will be good to get back home on Tuesday,” Wassermann said. “It will be good to get another crack at it.”
