We all know that regular exercise is crucial for a healthy mind and body. You should aim to get at least thirty minutes each day, and while some like to do this with a buddy, others would rather go it alone.

Unfortunately, the world is sometimes a dangerous place, with injuries, attacks and more affecting men and women alike. That being said, no one should have to be stuck on a treadmill out of fear.

Exercising alone may come with its dangers, but here are four ways to stay safe:

Avoid isolated areas

You may be working out solo, but that doesn’t mean you should be completely alone. Instead of opting for a quiet and isolated area, choose a spot that is popular, regardless of the time of day.

This could be a bike path or hiking trail, depending on your favorite form of exercise. This way, if something were to happen to you, there would be help only a shout away.

If possible, it also helps for this area to be close to home so that you don’t have far to travel there and back.

Bring the essentials

When it comes to solo exercise, it’s always best to prepare for the worst. This means carrying something for self-defense, like pepper spray. Unfortunately, far too many people avoid such a tool, as they wonder what is pepper spray made of, how much damage it can do and more.

Thankfully, all of this information is easily available, both online and in the stores you buy it from. You should also ensure you carry your phone, some cash and a form of ID at all times.

Always be aware

As helpful as pepper spray can be in an attack, it won’t be much use to you if you don’t see the threat coming. Regardless of what time it is or where you are, you must always be aware of your surroundings.

It may be more fun to run with headphones, but it also makes it difficult to listen out for danger. If you must have your tunes, you should keep the volume low or take out one earbud.

When something doesn’t feel right, always listen to your gut and get out of there.

Know your limits

Getting outside your comfort zone can help you to grow as a person. However, there’s a big difference between pushing your limits and being reckless.

If you don’t feel ready to exercise alone yet, then you don’t have to. There’s no use in making yourself uncomfortable for no reason. When you’re out alone, you should also pay attention to your body and recognize when it’s had enough.

If you’re in pain or feeling faint, you should call it a day, before you put yourself at risk.

Exercising alone can be empowering and fun, but only if you do it the right way. As important as it is to stay fit and healthy, you can’t put yourself in danger to do so.
