With the wildfire season fast approaching, homeowners everywhere start to feel the heat in more ways than one. Wildfires are becoming an increasingly common peril due to climate change, requiring us not only to be reactive but proactively armed with knowledge and the right measures. Here, we discuss how to get ready for wildfire season this year so you can better protect your home and your loved ones from this natural peril.

Create a defensive space

First, create a defensive space around your property. This task involves managing vegetation, clearing dead or dry materials that could fuel a fire, and choosing landscaping that’s less likely to ignite.

You should also think about the materials that make up your home’s exterior and, if possible, opt for fire-resistant options. Essentially, you’re setting up a buffer zone that could one day save your home.

Have a recovery plan

In the throes of preparation, don’t overlook the aftermath. Having a recovery plan in place is as crucial as any preventive measure. This plan should encompass the immediate steps to take post-evacuation, including how to assess damage safely and contact insurance providers. It should also include a plan for cleaning up after a wildfire.

Equally important is making sure you have a digital backup of important documents and a comprehensive inventory of your home’s contents, which will prove invaluable in the wake of a wildfire.

Stay informed and connected

Information is your first line of defense. Stay informed about the local fire danger levels and have a clear understanding of the evacuation routes and plans specific to your community.

Establish a communication plan with family members, ensuring everyone knows what to do and where to go if you have to evacuate. Technology like mobile apps can keep you updated with real-time alerts, making them an essential tool in your preparation kit.

Equip your home

Finally, equip your home with tools and technologies to fight or withstand fires. Invest in fire extinguishers, install sprinkler systems and cover your home’s vents with metal mesh.

Firefighting tools stored in an accessible location can empower you to deal with small fires before they escalate, provided it’s safe to do so.

As you get ready for wildfire season this year, remember that the key to safety lies in preparedness, vigilance and resilience. By taking proactive steps today, you can safeguard your home and loved ones against the unpredictable nature of wildfires.
